A divorce action may be filed at the family court of either spouse’s domicile or of the place where the spouses lived together for the last six months before the action. For spouses living in Bakırköy, the competent courts are the Bakırköy Family Courts.

The court decides custody based on the child’s best interests, taking into account the child’s age, education, relationship with each parent and, if old enough, the child’s own views. Joint custody may also be considered where circumstances allow.
